US Payer Panel Insights Survey: Evolving Evidence Landscape and Priorities

The Petauri Evidence Team are delighted to launch the first edition of the Petauri ‘US Payer Panel Insights Survey: Evolving Evidence Landscape and Priorities’ report. Our US HEOR experts have designed and conducted a quantitative and qualitative primary research survey with experienced stakeholders (n=20) from US payer organizations, via our Petauri Payer Network. In the White Paper, our experts summarize and evaluate the results and also provide insights around what they mean for US payer evidence strategy.

The White Paper provides valuable insights such as key preferences and sources of evidence that payers leverage to make coverage decisions, their preferred timeline for receiving this information, and their insights on recent changes in healthcare policies. This survey, conducted by Petauri Evidence, included a heterogeneous mix of experienced US payers, covering a wide range of questions on evidentiary needs and healthcare trends.

Within the White Paper, key themes of payer insights include:

  • Disease burden
  • Clinical evidence
  • Economic evidence
  • Real-world evidence
  • Engagement with manufacturers on evidence
  • Perspectives on the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA)
  • Influence of the Institute for Clinical and Economic Review (ICER)

A small sample of the payer insights in our White Paper:

  • In the absence of a head-to-head clinical trial at launch, 75% of payers surveyed stated that they conduct their own informal indirect treatment comparison/naïve direct comparisons
  • Regarding pre-approval information exchange (PIE), payers had a preference for receiving this information 0–6 months (45%) or 6–12 months prior to launch (40%), with most preferring to receive it via live virtual meetings (65%) or in-person meetings (45%)
  • 70% of payers surveyed believed that ICER reports were ‘highly’ or ‘moderately’ influential in the initial review of products
  • Only 20% of payers surveyed were not generating RWE within their institution to inform coverage discussions
